DBMM Army Lists Book 4 potential errata

Page history last edited by Steve Mills 12 years ago Saved with comment

Anglo-Norman
This has:
Anglo-Norman and mercenary knights... - Irr Kn ... 12-24
Sergeants, fyrd, town militia and mercenaries... - Irr Sp ... 12-58
and also has
Only King Stephen's army from 1135 AD to 1154 AD:
Mercenary sub-general ... [commanding all and only mercenaries] ...
Brabancon/Flemish mercenary knights - Reg Kn (O)
Brabancon/Flemish mercenary foot - Reg Pk (I)
also
Genoese or other mercenary crossbowmen - Irr Bw ...

A strict reading of the mercenary sub-general "commanding all and only
mercenaries" would require that he command any Irr Kn, Irr Sp and Irr Bw
fielded as mercenaries, as well as commanding the Brabancon/Flemish
mercenaries. I doubt that this is the intention. This would be solved if
the "commanding" rule was changed to "[commanding all and only Reg Kn and
Reg Pk]"

Sicilian
This has:
Only before 1267 AD:
Saracen foot archers ... *20-32
and a list note that states:
"Items marked *only apply before the conquest of the Kingdom by Charles of
Anjou in 1266, after which no more than 4 elements of Kn (I) can be used."
The first thing to say about this is that the "*" marking the Saracen foot
archers is now unnecessary because its purpose is now served by the heading
"Only before 1267 AD:"
The second thing to say about this is that the Kn (I) referred to in this
list note are not the Italian communal or mercenary knights included in this
list but were the double based mercenary German Kn (I) included in the DBM
list. These German knights are now Kn (O) in this list and restricted to
1218 AD to 1266 AD.
Therefore the "*" and its accompanying list note can be deleted from the
list.
Others have noted the upgrade for missing Aragonese and Catalan troops.
On the subject of the Italian communal or mercenary Kn (I) in this list,
these should probably be upgraded from 1320 to be consistent with Kn in the
Italian Condotta list, ie:
Only from 1320 AD:
Upgrade Italian communal or mercenary Kn (I) to Condottieri or lanze
spezzate elmeti - Reg Kn (O) @ 12AP ... All

This has:
Turkoman ally-general [commanding all and only Turkomans]... *0-2
This is OK if 1 Turkoman ally-general is used, but what happens if 2 are
used?
It might forestall quibbles like this if this list entry was changed to:
Turkoman ally-generals [commanding all and only Turkomans]... *0-2

Medieval German
In the list of external allies, the line for Italian allies ends with "-
only T in 1401." This should be "- only [T] in 1401 AD."
The line for Habsburg-Burgundian allies has "- only [I] from 1486" This
should be "- only [I] from 1486 AD"

This has:
Turkoman ally-general [commanding all and only Turkomans] - Irr LH (S) @
12AP... *1-2
This is OK if 1 Turkoman ally-general is used, but what happens if 2 are
used?
It might forestall quibbles like this if this list entry was changed to:
Turkoman ally-generals [commanding all and only Turkomans]... *1-2
The correct AP for these ally-generals is 11AP not 12AP.

Trapezuntine Byzantine
The Irr LH (S) sub-general should be 16AP not 17AP.

It seems a bit restrictive to have the Tammachi contingent in the list as
compulsory in most regions covered by the list. This is the sort of thing
that really skews the army structure. Would it be possible to specify it so
that the Tammachi general and contingent are compulsory only if any Tammachi
are used?
The Kan-t'ao-lu ally-general should be Irr Hd (F) @ 6AP not 1AP.
0-4 Handgunners are included under the heading "Only after 1275 AD:" and
also under the heading "Only in China after 1275 AD:". Is this a
duplication? Or is it intended?.

Anatolian Turkoman
The correct AP for an Irr LH (S) Turkoman ally-general is 11AP not 12AP.

Morean Byzantine
This has:
Only from 1370 AD to 1458 AD:
Albanian ally-genaral [commanding all and only Albanians] + various Albanian
troops.
The list also has:
Only from 1370 AD to 1456 AD:
Acciajuoli Athens allies:
-Italian condottieri ally-general + various Italian troop types + Albanians
... 2-6
And there is a list note that states "The minimum marked * applies if more
than 12 Albanian elements are used."

The problem here is that if an Albanian ally-general must command all
Albanians, what happens with the Albanians in the Acciajuoli Athens allied
contingent?
And taking the Acciajuoli Athens allied contingent also immediately means
that there are more than 12 Albanian elements used thus triggering the use
of the Albanian ally-general. This would be sorted out if the Albanians in
the Acciajuoli Athens allied contingent were called something else.
It would also help if the list specified what the Italian condottieri
ally-general can command. Possibly could change the various entries in the
list to (although this is a bit clumsy):
Albanian ally-genaral [commanding all and only Albanians not in Italian
service]...
-Italian condottieri ally-general [commanding all Italians and Albanians in
Italian service]...
-Albanians in Italian service...
The minimum marked * applies if more than 12 Albanian elements not in
Italian service are used."

Order of St John
This has:
"Only in Greece from 1377 AD to 1381 AD:
Navarrese allies - List: Navarrese Company (Bk 4/39) [can include the
Italian ally-general]
How is this supposed to work? To start with you would need to select a
Navarrese ally-general and some compulsory Navarrese troops from the
Navaresse list. You then have the ally-general rule on page 1 that an
allied contingent cannot include allies of its own. Therefore also
including an Italian ally-general in a Navarrese allied contingent would not
comply with the ally-general rules on page 1. Moreover, the Italian
ally-general is specified in the Navarrese list as commanding all and only
Italians so couldn't be selected as the ally-general that commands
Navarrese. I would suggest that if an Italian ally-general is to be
included when a Navarrese ally is used, that a sub-list for an Italian
allied contingent needs to be added to the Order of St John list.

Feudal sipahis has "Before 1362 AD" and "After 1362 AD", the second of these
dates should be "From 1362 AD".

As has already been noted in another message to this mailing list, the Bw

Medieval Spanish or Portuguese
This has:
Only from 1495 AD to 1503 AD [S] or 1515 AD [P]:
When I first read this I thought it meant that options under this heading
were only available to Portuguese in 1515 AD. I now realise that it means
they are available to Portuguese from 1495 AD to 1515 AD. It might help to
make it explicitly clear by changing the heading to:
Only from 1495 AD to 1503 AD [S] or 1495 AD to 1515 AD [P]:

The Neapolitan ally-general in this list should be specified as [commanding

This has:
Chinese archers or crossbowmen ... 2-3 per 4 Bd
This requires that Chinese archers or crossbowmen must be selected if any
"Dare-to-die" Bd (F) are used. I doubt that this is the intention. I would
suggest changing this to:
Chinese archers or crossbowmen ... 2-3 per 4 Bd (I) or (O)

100 Years War English

My understanding is that the Gascons featured heavily at Poitiers 1356 both Knights and the foot. However the knights themselves appear to be excluded from the list at that date being available until 1350 alone?

Later Swiss

Letzinen are used at Voegelinsegg in 1403 and Stoss in 1405 but are restricted to only the early Swiss list.
